Outerknown is part of a very small group of textile brands to achieve Regenerative Organic Certified® status. We’re proud to offer one of the largest selections of Regenerative Organic Certified® clothing in the marketplace.
Regenerative organic agriculture involves practices that restore soil health and support the entire farm ecosystem. This includes techniques like planting cover crops, rotating different crops, low- to no-tillage, composting, and zero use of persistent chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
Regenerative Organic Certified® farming practices aim to reduce and repair farming's impact on the environment. Industrial farming methods have damaged the planet's soil and climate with predictions that global topsoils could be depleted in 60 years at the current rate. Industrial agriculture also contributes up to 25% of the emissions causing the climate crisis. Regenerative organic farming can help restore soil health, ensure animal welfare, improve the lives of farmers, help sequester carbon, build healthier communities, and reap cleaner, more abundant yields.
Impact to Date
From 2023 to 2024, we’re excited to have increased our usage of Regenerative Organic Certified® cotton from 4.07% to 14.29% (fiber weight), with Regenerative Organic Certified® cotton projects in both Peru and India.
In Peru:
Just over 24 acres of Tanguis cotton and just over 37 acres of Pima cotton–about 61 acres of Regenerative Organic Certified® cotton farms in Peru.
2-3 Tanguis cotton farms in Chincha Valley, 4-5 Pima cotton farms in Lambeyeque.
Farmers are learning to manage their costs and additional incomes, allowing them to collectively decide how to use the premiums. This has fostered a stronger sense of community, giving producers a unified voice. The program has also supported various activities, including holiday breakfasts for children and improvements to local nurseries.
In India:
100 acres of Regenerative Organic Certified® cotton farms located in Khultabad Village in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra.
We work with 80 farmers ( 1-2 acres per farmer).
